Online Pilot (P1)

What we offer

We are proud to offer pilot training as a VATSIM Authorised Training Organisation.

Currently we offer training for the P1 rating which is the first award in a series of modular ratings which are available to VATSIM members.

The Online Pilot (P1) training is ideal for new members of VATUK who want to learn a little more about the organisation and how to courteously operate their aircraft in UK airspace. It is also the perfect opportunity for more experienced pilot to learn something new which may make the VATSIM experience that little bit more enjoyable.

The modules we cover are:

  • Download and install essential software
  • Flight Plans
  • Weather
  • Connecting to the network
  • Navigation basics Facility web sites
  • Maps and Charts
  • Contacting ATC
  • VATSIM Basics
  • VATSIM Pilot’s Resource Center
  • Good VATSIM Citizenship
  • Communications

We cover the basics in each of these areas with our team of friendly Pilot Mentors.

Full details of the syllabus are available here: http://www.vatsim.net/pilots/ptd/ratings/p1/

Who is this for?

Our P1 syllabus is perfect for brand new members to VATSIM who want to fly in UK airspace, or those who have flown on VATSIM before but are new to VATUK’s airports and want to learn more. Even as an experienced VATSIM or real world pilot, our syllabus is almost guaranteed to cover something you didn’t know and therefore it suits almost everybody. You must have a P1 rating prior to being permitted to enroll on any other P rated course both at VATUK and throughout the rest of the ATOs.

What to expect

Whilst you don’t need a pilot rating to fly on VATSIM or inside VATUK’s airspace, we strongly recommend you join our course to get the rating. It’s generally very quick and easy. We make the process as “scary-free” as possible. All of our mentors and instructors are trained in the programme and trained how to provide it.

When you first sign up you’ll receive a welcome email from the Pilot Training Manager which explains what to do next. Generally, those who can use voice on the network will be invited to attend one of our induction evenings which are run regularly. You will join a number of other members who are beginning their P1 training with VATUK on our teamspeak 3 server and meet our mentoring team who will be providing you with the tuition required to get you through our relevant and interesting syllabus. Those who are unable to use “voice” on the network (I.e. using a headset to listen and speak to other participants) will have the opportunity to meet on the network and receive their introduction on a one to one basis.

After your introductory session you will be able to request “P1_VATSIM” sessions inside our RTS system (which is a Learning Management System). We will show you how to use it in your introductory session. From there the mentors will take you through the syllabus answering questions along the way to prepare you for the “mini-test” which is a 20 question multiple choice quiz. You must score 16 in order to go for your final session with an examiner, in the case that all the ticks on your individual progress tracking sheet are set to "test standard".

Once you have demonstrated that your knowledge is to a P1 standard, your VATSIM account will be accredited with a P1 rating.

  • Join ONE Introduction to P1 group mentoring session - if you are unable to use voice please do not do this, but instead email the pilot training department so we can make alternative arrangements
  • Follow these instructions to get set up on Team Speak: http://www.vatsim-uk.co.uk/website/teamspeak/ - if you are unable to use voice please skip this step
  • At the allotted time (given in the RTS system or by email) please meet us in the designated place (more often than not the "Pilots" room on the VATUK Teamspeak server).

How long will it take?

Each student learns at their own pace and we will continue to support you regardless of how long it takes you to cover the material, in most cases it takes approximately 6hrs split across six different evenings to be at the point where you are able to succeed in the practical exam. Please note that this depends on each individual's availability. The mean time spent enrolled on the course prior to rating upgrade is 12.25 days.

Direct Access

As P1 is a benchmark rating required to progress onto other courses whilst catering mainly for newer members, we offer direct access to a practical exam for experienced VATSIM members. You must write an application of interest to the Pilot Training Manager and more information will be provided as to the steps to succeeding in a direct access exam.

What are your success rates?

Despite a rigorous exam, we have attained a 90% final exam pass rate.

What else do you offer?

If there is something you would like assistance from our pilot training team which falls outside of our P1 syllabus, we may be able to accommodate you. Please email the Pilot Training Manager with details and we will see what we are able to do for you.
