Flying and controlling on the VATSIM network is a great way to enjoy the perks of an interactive flight simulation session, and making new friends along the way. To fly online, all you need is a copy of Flight Simulator or X Plane, and you're ready to go! For controlling, you don't need anything except a working computer, all the software is provided free!
This page outlines step-by-step instructions on how to become a pilot or virtual air traffic controller in the UK. Many of our members are both pilots and controllers, so feel free to give them both a try! Step 1
Visit VATSIM.net and register for your ID and password. This is a very quick process and is completely FREE. Ensure you choose Europe as your region and the UK as your division.
Step 2
Download VRC or Euroscope, our recommended ATC clients. Other useful software include VATSpy and ATCA.
Step 3
Join the VATSIM-UK division* if you didn't do it in Step 1, by going to VATSIM Member Services.
Step 4
Register with our Regional Training Scheme System. Known as the RTS System for short, this is the tool you will use to monitor and arrange training, as well as taking your theory test and many other activities.
Step 5
Take a look at our ATC Training Center which is where all theory training material is held. Take your time to read through the material; when you feel you are ready, log into the RTS System to take your open-book theory test. You are now well on your way to becoming a controller with us, and the subsequent steps to complete your training will be made clear to you.
* Please allow the RTS System up to 24 hours to process your application to join the UK Division.

Step 2Download Squawkbox 4 or FSInn, the two recommended pilot clients. These are the free pieces of software you will use to connect your flight simulator to VATSIM. If installing FSInn, you are strongly recommended to visit this page for instructions on how to achieve best results. Step 3Visit the Quick Start Guide and Pilot Resource Center to get started as a pilot on the network. Step 4Consider joining a Pilot Training Program to enhance your pilot skills or join a distinguished virtual airline like British Airways Virtual.
